Landry and Kensie

UPDATE 05/27/2010

Look at us now!

We have almost gained our weight back and have been vaccinated, fixed and micro chipped. We really like it here but we need to go to our new home and have our own family. We are very loving and sweet dogs. Our foster parents say we have lovely temperaments and we learn very fast. We have forgotten the bad past and are just looking forward to a wonderful life in our furever home. We have to stay together as we are very bonded, so if you have a place in your home and heart for both of us, place an application with WRNT and ask for us.

UPDATE, 3/17/2010

After spending the weekend recuperating at HEVH Laundry and Kenzie went to their foster home on March 15.  They were doing well, eating like little pigs, and getting around very good.  They joined 5 Westies, including one foster Westie and were greeted cordially by all.  They settled in very quickly and are now getting their strength back, exploring their foster home and yard and getting to know their foster siblings.  They have adjusted amazingly well with very little emotional problems.  Since they are so thin, they are being fed puppy food three times a day.  Both are on medication for skin problems, but it expected that once cleared up they will be fine.  Kenzie has almost no hair at all.  The little she had was shaved off due to dirt and mattes. She is enjoying wearing t-shirts and sweat shirts to keep her warm.  Landry had more coat to begin with but was also cut short to remove the mattes.

They are  very sweet and affectionate dogs and really seem to be happy and content in their foster home.  They are friendly to everyone and get along well with all of the other dogs.   They are very bonded and will only be placed together when the time comes.  They will return to HEVH in about a month to be spayed and neutered before being ready for adoption.

Westie Rescue of North Texas was contacted on Saturday evening, March 6, 2010, by Linda, a lady who lives in the country near Azle, TX.  Someone had dropped off two dogs near her property.   They were in horrible condition.  She thought one was a Westie and the other one a Scottie.  She was feeding them to keep them from starving but was unable to do anything else. According to her, the male, had been bringing food to the female to try to keep her alive.

On Sunday March 7, this information was sent to the WRNT board of directors.   Communication was started with Linda to get more information.  She sent photos of them but they were so dirty and matted and wet, we were not able to discern what breed of dogs they were.  They definitely looked like they were terriers.  WRNT made a quick decision on Sunday to rescue them and arrangements were made to transport them to our WRNT Vets.

On Monday morning, March 8, they were picked up by a director to transport them to McKinney, TX.  The female, who is light colored, we named Kenzie, and the male who is darker, we named Landry.  This is what our director found:

"When I first saw Kenzie, she was huddled in an old wet blanket placed in a muddy hollow against the outer wall of a home under construction. She didn't move when I approached her and picked her up -- she wasn't completely limp, but acted as though she was very ill, indeed."

When Landry and Kensie arrived at Highlands Eldorado Veterinary Hospital in McKinney, they were quickly checked over and Kenzie was found to be very anemic and needed a blood transfusion.  They would both have to be in ICU for several days.  Both were in bad shape but Kenzie much worse then Landry.  They were literally skin and bones.   The board of directors of WRNT made the decision that we would proceed with the treatment to try to save these two.   It will be a few days before we know the cause of Kenzie’s anemia.   Both dogs were eating and drinking water.  Kenzie had perked up a little and Landry was going outside to potty on shaky legs.

On Tuesday morning, March 8, the blood arrived for the transfusion and Kenzie tolerated the blood transfusion.   They were both eating well and drinking water.  The vet staff noted how well they were eating, a very good sign.  Both showed improvement.  Landry got a bath and a trim to remove the mattes.

On Wednesday morning, March 9, both dogs are becoming more responsive and alert.  They were found to have hookworms and we think the worms are the cause of Kenzie’s severe anemia - they literally suck the blood of their hosts.    Thankfully both dogs are heartworm negative.  They have voracious appetites, which will help them gain weight which they desperately need.

Updates will be sent as they come in. At this point, the cost of treatment will be over $2000.
