Westie Rescue of North Texas Places "Spencer"

Westie from Abilene finds a "Forever Home"

February 1, 2006 -- Westie Rescue of North Texas announces the placement of Spencer, a rescue from Abilene.

On February 1, 2006, Marvin Katz saw an Internet post from Jennifer Goebel of Texas Tailwaggers Village Rescue about a Westie at Abilene Animal Control in kennel "E4". Marvin looked at "E4" on the Animal Control website, and thought he seemed adoptable. Since there is no Westie rescue in Abilene, Marvin started planning a day trip to Abilene to bring the little guy to Dallas!

Fortunately there were also two Boston Terriers that needed to get to Dallas to their rescue group. Jennifer's Mom lives in Abilene so she pulled "E4" and then met Jennifer halfway to Abilene to give her him, as well as the two Boston Terriers. Jennifer was also kind enough to deliver "E4" to his foster home. He was a happy, loving, inquisitive little boy, and other than being very skinny, seemed fairly healthy. He was, however, a little green around the gills from the car ride! Seems like he probably hadn't had many car rides, and was prone to carsickness. He was renamed Spencer, and adjusted quickly to his new home. He spent the rest of the weekend taking walks with his foster Mom, laying in the sun, chasing squirrels, and eating lots of kibble!

Monday morning he had to go in for annual shots, a vet check, and neutering. Luckily he was heartworm negative, however needed to be treated for hookworms. The vet estimated his age at about 2 years. Everything went routinely with his neutering, and he was able to return to his foster home that evening. By Tuesday he was almost good as new, so Marvin started reviewing his list of prospective adopters. It was decided to first contact a couple in Carrollton that currently had a 4-year old Westie named Maverick, and were looking for a companion for him. Because Spencer was so friendly with other dogs, and because they were fairly similar in age, Marvin decided this might be a good match. A couple of days later, Maverick and his Mom and Dad, Mary and Jonathan, came over to meet Spencer. Maverick and Spencer were a bit wary of each other at first, but soon were getting along great. He went home with them that evening!

After several days in his new home Maverick and Spencer continue to bond, and Mary and Jonathan are amazed at what a good dog Spencer is. Much to their delight, having Spencer around has calmed Maverick down, but Mary is having to get used to having two little white dogs virtually attached to her! It is a happy Westie ending!

Unfortunately, due to the number of animals they receive, Abilene Animal Control has to euthanize animals. It is heartbreaking to think how many sweet, loving, adoptable dogs like Spencer are euthanized in shelters across the country every day. While we always appreciate volunteers time and donations at Westie Rescue of North Texas, all-breed shelters are usually seriously underfunded, and desperately in need of volunteers. Even if you can't make a cash donation, you can donate your time and affection by simply petting or walking these dogs. A little love and human companionship can make all the difference in the world to these unfortunate dogs.

Spencer is what Westie Rescue is all about: Finding Forever Homes for Westies in need.
