Description:

Colby is about 6 years old and underweight. He is HW- and fecal-, but is positive for Ehrlichia. Colby was put on an antibiotic and doxcycline for the ehrlichia and was put on a good natural dog food to help control any allergies he may have and to help him gain weight.

The Vet checked him over, treated him for fleas and ticks, and shaved all of his hair off because it was matted so badly.. When he got to his foster home, and his foster mom was checking him out, Colby still had several "live" ticks and fleas on him. Obviously he was infested pretty badly for the ticks and fleas to still be alive after being treated by the Vet.

We think Colby probably lived in a cage most of his life, but in spite of everything he had been through, Colby easily adapted to his new foster home. However, Colby didn't trust anyone. He especially didn't trust his foster dad and stayed close to his foster mom whenever dad was around. Colby was very skittish about everything, especially going out a door and pottying in the grass. After a few days and following the foster family's dog's lead, Colby decided that going potty outside in the grass wasn't such a bad thing after all, and he was free of his bellyband for at least the time he was outside. As a matter of fact, he enjoyed being out in the back yard so much that you couldn't get him to go back through the door to go inside. Colby had to be tricked into coming back through the door. There is something about doors and people standing by them that Colby just doesn't like. Colby also doesn't like to take a bath, which was not a good thing, as Colby needed to be bathed at least once a week, not only because he had a bad odor but because he had a huge hot spot on his side that needed to heal. Malaseb baths and Relief baths (both special shampoos) along with the antibiotics were a good way to treat his hot spot and the baths made him smell so much better! By the way Colby acted when water was sprayed on him, you can just bet that he had been "hosed" down in the past and water and baths were not a good thing as far as Colby was concerned. However, once the spraying with water trauma was over, and Colby was warm and dry again, he would be very loving and playful and would act like a normal westie (whatever normal is!). Then he would curl up and go to sleep. Once Colby's hair grows back in and once he has adapted to being "free" to romp and roam, with limits of course, Colby will be your typical loving, loves to play, loves to snuggle, and loves to give kisses, westie.

Colby has now gone to his new forever home and after about two weeks with his new mom, she said, "Colby is doing great. His fur is looking MUCH better and he's already gained some weight. I'm really enjoying having him!"
