Description:
Maisie came to rescue from a local Animal Shelter. She
originally came from the same home as Mack. Maisie had puppies
relatively recently and comes to rescue with some relatively minor skin
problems, possibly due to fleas. Our rescue vet estimates her age
between 7 and 8 years old. We will bring her up-to-date on her
shots and have her spayed before she will be ready for adoption.
Upon examination, it was determined that Maisie has mammary tumors.
She will go to one of our Foster Homes while our rescue vet runs tests
to determine how best to proceed.
Here is what Maisie's Foster Mom has to say about her:
"Maisie is trucking along. She, like Mack, seems
starved for human attention as well. She wants to snuggle right
next to you every chance she can. We can pet her and give her rubs
and when we stop, she's quickly pawing us to continue. She still
has a bit of that yucky bad skin smell but I bathed her last night and
it's a little better. In time I'm sure it'll go away. She's
not very vocal yet I should say, I've only heard her bark once.
I'm sure my 3 will teach her in no time!
She is certainly a sweetheart!!!"
UPDATE: The first
set of test results returned inconclusive so we are sending in another
set of samples. Until we know more we won't know the best course
of treatment for Maisie.
UPDATE: The second
set of test results returned with a high probable that the tumors may be
cancerous. Maisie will undergo surgery to remove the tumors,
hopefully with sufficient margins to ensure that it has not spread.
The lymph node results indicated that the cancer, if that is what it is,
had not spread to them. Our rescue vet will know more after her
surgery and the cultures have been examined at the lab.
Maisie continues to thrive at her Foster Families home. She
will remain there until she recovers from her ordeal, perhaps as long as
another month or so.
If you are interested in adopting this little girl, or just want to
help out with her expenses, please use one of the buttons available on
this page to file an Adoption Application or make a Donation. Your
participation is critical to the success of our organization and the
well being of the rescue pups, like Maisie!
UPDATE: Maisie's
surgery is scheduled for the 26th of February. Check back to find
out how it went.
UPDATE:
Maisie's surgery was successful. Two tumors have been removed from
her left side and, as expected, the lab report was cancer
positive. Although the tumors were cancerous, it has not spread to
the lymph nodes. According to our rescue vet, "There is a
moderate potential for recurrence and low potential for local lymph node
metastasis." She will need to be closely monitored from now
on.
UPDATE 3-08-2008:
Maisie will need another surgery to remove a tumor on her right
side. Our rescue vet felt her risk was too high removing tumors
from both sides and spaying her all at the same time. So, she is
scheduled for her next surgery on Thursday, April 3. Check back to
find out how it went.
UPDATE 4-05-2008:
Maisie has gone to her Forever Home. Maisie joined her new family
today. According to her foster mom, "This has got to be the
ultimate placement for sure with many happy tears!"
It is hard to picture Maisie's condition when she first arrived in
foster care and the tough road she traveled to get to where she is
now. A totally different Westie girl with lots of bouncy spunky
energy, lots of love and Westie kisses to give, knows what she wants and
goes for it. Maisie had two big bags of toys, treats, food, balls
and more toys to lug to her new home.
Mack was so elated to see her and they ran and chased each other in
the yard. Their new parents said Mack didn't play with his toys,
but today all that changed, he played with Maisie's stuffed toys and ran
with them in his mouth while they chased each other. He was so
happy and perky.
Maisie's foster mom said, "I will miss my Snugglebug and her
famous Maisie dance but I'm so thrilled that everyone worked so hard to
achieve our primary objective in providing her the medical attention she
so greatly deserved, finding them a great home and keeping them
together!! Maisie and Mack are two very fortunate Westies!"
Here is the picture taken on Adoption Day, Maisie on the left and
Mack on the right. What a happy family!
